You're a first-time mom, and to say that you have never been this tired or overwhelmed in all your life would be an understatement. You're facing a lot of changes and challenges, and a lot of it feels out of your control. You wish you could regain that control but you're dealing with a lot of complicated emotions and discomforts that come with just having a baby.

The body you have known all your life is now different and the feelings surrounding it are complicated. You may be having a hard time processing your pregnancy, the birth of your baby, and all that came along with it. Perhaps, you even had traumatic experiences associated with your pregnancy and birthing process that are hard to think about and share. The guilt you feel for having negative feelings about becoming a mother also doesn't feel safe to share.

You're Struggling with A Lot of Change and Feeling Isolated

Your relationships have changed and that can be hard to navigate. You may find it difficult to communicate with your partner and express what you need from them. They're trying but you just feel so misunderstood and alone. You're also feeling a lot of pressure, and hearing a lot of unsolicited advice, from family members which can be difficult to manage.

You want to feel like yourself again, but you don't even know who that is anymore. The person you once were feels like it's slipping away as parenting begins to consume your every thought and moment. When was the last time you enjoyed something for yourself and had a break from all your parenting responsibilities?  You love being a mother and are so grateful for your child, but you’re struggling to adapt to all these changes. You're needing support from others who understand what you're going through.

What are the Benefits of the New Mom Support Group?

For a new mom, there are a lot of changes and adaptations you have to go through in a quick period of time. Group therapy for new moms is a great way to give yourself an opportunity to reconnect with other mothers and prioritize your own self-care. It gives you a chance to share some of the negative emotions you may be feeling and also receives valuable resources from other moms who have been in similar situations.

I am Here to Help You Build Confidence in Your New Role

At Restority Space, my hope for the therapy group for new moms is for women to recognize their efforts. You are trying your best and coping with a lot of changes. There is no "right" way to be a mother, and I want you to believe in your own capabilities. That's where the confidence comes in. I have worked with many new moms who have felt frustrated with being the "default" parent and still having their partner depend on them for the invisible load of managing their home. They also were managing anxiety surrounding going back to work, how to raise their child, and the decisions that come with it such as breastfeeding, sleep training, etc.

After attending group therapy for new moms, these moms were able to realize that they were becoming burnout and needed some self-care. That the best way to take care of their child was to take care of themselves. They were also able to recognize their efforts to do the best for their child and felt more confident in their parenting decisions.

Through group therapy for new moms, you will have a space for your thoughts and feelings, as well as engage with other moms going through the same. I will provide resources and help you to make meaningful connections with others. The goal is for you to gain confidence in yourself so that you can confidently make decisions regarding your child without feeling overwhelmed or alone.

My Approach to New Mom Support Group

I approach my new mom support group by helping new moms see that they also need to prioritize their self-care. When their baby is born, they feel invisible as everything is about the baby and that's all that everyone sees or asks about. This group is to provide a space for new moms to realize that they matter too and should be taking care of themselves. The group is a chance for women to see themselves reflected in others who are going through the same and provides a space for them to process their complicated emotions without judgment or expectation.

I will be leading this group myself and it is a virtual, open-processing support group. Limited to no more than 8 participants from the NY and NJ area. My goal is to help new moms overcome their mom guilt and to help them gain confidence in themselves as a mother so that they can make their own decisions without feeling pressured or overwhelmed. Together, we will process our feelings and experiences, share resources, provide support to one another, and learn from each other.
